It’s everywhere, mocking you. Staring down at you from billboards. Blasting out from your television. Hiding inside your radio. Lying in wait to jump out at you at the first opportunity. It’s…cheap car insurance. (What? It’s not Halloween yet, can’t be anything too bad!) The question is, how do you get all those lovely percentages and dollar signs off of those high paid ads and into your car insurance policy?
Saving money on car insurance always looks so easy on TV.You pick up the phone, you dial an insurance company or two and suddenly insurers are falling all over themselves to give you full coverage at a fraction of the cost your neighbor is paying. You’re then free to spend weeks mocking him for paying too much for inadequate coverage. Ha ha, ha ha, ha ha.
Then you shut the television off and reality interferes. Don’t get me wrong, cheap car insurance isn’t by any means impossible to come by. People find it all the time. It’s just that getting a great deal on your insurance usually takes a little more than a perky salesperson and a room full of possibilities.
The road to cheap insurance is paved with discounts. Lots of discounts. See, in order to find rock bottom prices on decidedly not cheap coverage you have to first think like an insurance company. No matter how many ads they put out there proclaiming their dedication to their customers they all have one common goal in mind-to make money. It’s the nature of the beast. And to continue to turn a profit while paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in medical and property damage claims (not to mention rental insurance)they’re going to have to adjust their car insurance rates to meet the challenge.
The best way for you to pave the road to cheap car insurance is to understand how the insurance system works and then figure out how to make it work for you. The first rule of the game is to keep your credit score high (above 700) and your driving record clean. You’d be amazed at what those two little things will do to send your car insurance rates plummeting.
Next (and this is where the big savings comes in) talk to your insurance agent about any discounts you might be eligible for. You’d be amazed what can save you money on your insurance rates! For example, did you know you can save up to 10% just by making sure your car has car alarms and some type of theft prevention system?(A fuel switch or GPSlocator, for example.)It’s all about keeping your car safe and minimizing the chance that you’ll be in an accident and/or anyone will get hurt.
When you’re talking about saving big bucks on your car insurance rates safety, security and risk minimalization are the keys. Manage that, and you’ll be well on your way to savings those shoppers in the TVcommercials could only dream about.
